I am currently sitting at my computer with the news on in the background. Its about 45 minutes away from when the first polls start to close. We are at the brink of a huge change in this country. Regardless of which candidate is elected, the days ahead are going to be history making.
I was in line at my polling place around 10am. It was a decent size line stretching across the parking lot, but thankfully I brought a good book. I had every intention of voting. The time it took didn’t matter. About an hour later I was inside with a ballot in hand. My first surprise was that Michigan doesn’t have electronic voting. Just the good old fashioned paper and pen. I went to my appointed desk and started filling in the bubbles. I had flashbacks to high school and standardized tests.
Everyone was in good spirits and most were happily remarking on the number of voters. Nobody seemed to mind the long line. Except for one women. She was a piece of work. I felt bad for the volunteer that got the brunt of her rudeness.
An hour and fifteen minutes after getting in line I was back in my car proudly wearing my “I Voted” sticker. I head that Starbucks and Krispy Kreme were giving out free coffee and dougnuts if you came in with your sticker. I also heard that a local bar was giving out free beer for voters with stickers. Whatever works I guess.
My popcorn is popping as we speak. It’s going to be a long night in front of the TV.
God Bless America.

A few random tidbits from my weekend:
- It is that time again when an oil change is necessary. When I lived in Georgia this was just another mundane errand that I would do when I was in town. I would pull into a local oil change/car wash place and leave 10 minutes later with new oil and a shiny car. In Michigan this task has become much more complicated. My Mazda (which is a foreign made car) is not really
accepted up here in the Motor City. They prefer General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford vehicles… which are all made in America. So, on Saturday, I thought I had hit the jackpot when I spotted a oil changing/car wash place near my apartment. I was only there briefly before I was instructed that they don’t carry oil filters for “my kind of car“. What proceeded was a very embarrassing reverse maneuver that involved several other cars having to move for me to get out of line. Ok… Looks like I’ll be making the HOUR drive to my “local” Mazda dealership again.
- My diet of Lien Cuisine dinners and peanut butter sandwiches has gotten disgustingly boring. During “My Life Formally Known As” I was quit the cook and enjoyed preparing meals. Most recently my pots and pans have been collecting dust due to the fact that cooking for one is never fun or economical. This weekend I had had enough and broke out the cookbooks. So, after church on Sunday I spent the rest of the day in the kitchen. I made several things, but most enjoyable was some good ol’ potato soup complete with crumbled bacon on top. The recipe makes enough for an army. I guess I know whats for lunch, and dinner, and lunch again…
- On Saturday morning I was up to my elbows with laundry, still in my pajamas, and still sporting some sexy bed hair when I heard a knock on my door. First of all, I don’t know anyone. Second of all, those that I do know don’t know where I live. Who is knocking on my door at 10am on a Saturday morning?! What I found was a father daughter team delivering paraphernalia on a particular presidential candidate. I won’t get political and share who they were representing. But, seriously, what a turn off. It’s not enough that these two candidates have taken over my TV and radio. Now they must come knocking at my door. I CAN’T WAIT until this election is over and we can reclaim our air waves.
- And lastly, my weekend consisted of watching Georgia get their butts kicked by F
lorida. I had strict instructions from my dad to try to spot him on TV since he made the trip down to Jacksonville for the game. Of course I didn’t see him. What I did see was a slaughtering. That, of course, didn’t stop the nagging text messages informing me of how warm and sunny it was down there. I sat on my couch wrapped in a blanket and gazed out the window into the grey Michigan sky and just smiled. At least I didn’t pay to watch such a crappy game.
